Teresa Rees | Mainstreaming Gender in Research: Lessons from Europe

Following the Fifth Framework Programme, the European Commission published a review of how the gender dimension had been addressed in the research projects it had funded. In some cases, the lack of attention to gender had compromised the validity of the research. Hence, in the 6th Framework Programme, the Commission insisted that each project had a Gender Action Plan. However, this did not prove to be effective and the stipulation has been dropped in the 7th Framework. Why is paying attention to the gender dimension important in research? This paper draws on the experience of being a ‘gender expert’ in a 6th Framework Programme Project on Knowledge Economies to explore the case for mainstreaming gender in research.
